About Education & Care Service

Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. They cater to families needing flexible childcare options and wanting a balanced approach that supports social, physical, and early academic development in a diverse environment.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Otatara Preschool, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“We’ve been with Otatara Preschool for a couple of years now. I feel comfortable at work knowing my daughter is safe, cared for, and having fun. The staff are skilled at managing the sometimes tricky drop-offs and big emotions that come with the more challenging developmental stages. I love the outdoor space and how much time the kids spend outside in the fresh air. They do heaps of hands on/messy sensory play which is great because I don’t love doing those activities at home! Looking forward to plenty more adventures to come :)”

“Couldn’t recommend Otatara Preschool enough! The staff are welcoming and friendly and truly care about the children. My wee boy loves attending and has made some really good friends and special bonds with his teachers. The centre is great with a huge outdoor space for the children to explore.”

“We love Otatara preschool. The kaiako are warm and engaging, they take a really active interest in the kids and their whanau and they always know what's been happening for your child throughout the day. They are very easy to communicate with and foster a great sense of community. They have a lovely large indoor and outdoor space for play. As a parent I have always felt heard and respected and the staff are great at working with parents to achieve the best outcomes for the kids. Can't recommend highly enough.”

“I would highly recommend Otatara Preschool to anyone looking at enrolling their child in an early childhood center. The space is open, inviting and celebrates every child who attends giving them a strong sense of belonging. The kids have space to create and to let off energy with their great outdoor area, as well as different imaginative play stations set up, and quiet reading areas. The teacher's are approachable, professional, and amazing with the kids. They are calm, friendly and really hands on and extremely easy to communicate with. My girls absolutely love all the teachers and I love being able to hear and see all the things my girls are experiencing and learning while they're there. The preschool offers so many different learning experiences within the center as well as taking the kids out and about to explore and play in other places as well which I have really loved. I think the most important thing of all is that my girls come home really happy and that's in huge part to the staff and the environment at Otatara Preschool.”
