What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Active Explorers Invercargill, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“Highly recommended to everyone. Both of my children attend this kindergarten, and they are both very happy here. The teachers and staff are all incredibly kind, caring, and supportive. It’s a welcoming environment where children feel safe and valued. I’ve seen real progress in my daughter after just 4–5 months of being enrolled. Her development in daily life has been noticeable, and it makes us very proud. My son also enjoys his time here and always looks forward to going. We’re really grateful to have found such a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow.”
“We've been really happy with the care our daughter has received at Active Explorers. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and we've loved being part of the community. They keep us well-informed, and make an effort to engage with the whole family - it's made the transition to childcare really smooth. The team put in extra effort around holiday events for the whole family like Christmas/Easter, school holiday programs, and recognising significant public holidays like Anzac Day. We’ve enjoyed seeing our daughter become more confident in her physical and social skills, and watching her engage with the local community during trips and excursions. The staff have also engaged in conversation around cultural inclusion, ensuring that they can acknowledge things that are truly important to each family. The centre is always well presented and has a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes our daughter feel happy and secure.”
“Have sent both my children here and they absolutely love it! God forbid I have another they will definitely be going here! Excellent, professional and friendly staff make it extremely easy leaving my children here. Would 100% recommend!”
“Wouldn’t send my kids anywhere else. Have sent all 3 there! The best experience! I feel comfortable leaving my kids In Their capable hands. Always having fun excursions and feed very well. Teachers are so patient and caring, worth every penny for my kiddos”
“Unenrolling my 2 year old here! Would not recommend Occasion 1- Came to pick up my son only to find him outside on a rainy day without a Jacket or shoes on :( - I approached the caretaker with blonde hair and she snapped at me "oh he just went out the door as you came in..." not good enough. So she knew before I got there that my son was going outside and didn't stop him or put a Jacket on him or shoes because she was clearly watching what he was doing to be able to say that. And most of the kids had been picked up by the time I got there so 'busy' isn't an excuse. But I let it go.. Occasion 2- Picked up my son from daycare, (I always offer him a snack and a kids juice to ease the trip on the way home). He downed the entire 200ml Juice instantly and asked for more - this is a lot for a 2 year old boy to drink in one shot. He was extremely parched :( and this happened again on the next day... Do they not offer the kids fluids throughout the day???? Upset that my son was this thirsty again, so I approached the admin lady and asked her if they could offer him more fluids please as he's just extremely thirsty when I come pick him up... Occasion 3- Picking him up and his jacket and clothes underneath are soaked and he was playing outside in the wind. Occasion 4 - Today! Its been a horrible extremely cold day outside with a mix of gusts of icy wind, snow, sleet and hail. I go to pick up my son again.... He and other small kids are outside!! I don't care if they have Jackets on even this was too cold to play outside. When I picked up my son his face was icy white and his hands were blue from being THAT COLD, and he had wet pants from playing in the sand pit outside while it was snowy/hailing!!! Extremely upset that they let our babies play outside on extremely cold days like today!! Not Acceptable!!!! Very unhappy mum for how my baby boy and other children are being treated.”
