About Playcentre
Playcentres are parent-led early childhood services where families work alongside trained educators to support children’s learning through play, offering a warm, community-driven environment. These centres cater to parents who want to be actively involved in their child’s early education, enjoying a supportive, cooperative model that values whānau participation and mixed-age play.
What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Onehunga Playcentre, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“OPC holds such a special place in my heart. Our family spent 6 years at OPC with our two children. Not only did we value the high quality early childhood education but we also found a community that we treasure. Playcentre focuses on child led play with parents taking the educator role. It is an opportunity to spend those precious years playing and learning alongside your child. OPC has consistently high ERO reviews and fits beautifully with what research tells us about the importance of exploration and learning through play in the early years.”
“The best Early Childhood Education Centre in the area. More than 16 areas of play, lots of sensory experience for babies, toddlers and young children on session. High Adult Child ratio, positive language and extension of learning through play. I highly recommend it.”
“Onehunga Playcentre offers parent-run, child-led play based learning from babies to school age. They're very well resourced and managed, with consistently high ERO ratings. A great option for making the most of your kids' early years.”
“Love OPC!!! The 8 years i spent here with my 3 kids were such great times! I so believe in parent lead education. My kids learnt socially, mentally, physically with me able to be a part of it all and to learn about child development alongside them. The great memories we have are so precious as they grow up and you see them less and less! My kids and I still have life long friends we made during this time. Thoroughly recommended!”
“My kids love it here, best place for them. Is a bit different to a kindy in that the parents are the educators. There is quite a bit of commitment required to do all the training but is nzqa qualified. Also as you progress you have to do office holder roles which take time, but for the joy of spending time with your kids and with other people's kids and getting to know the community is well worth it.”
