About Education & Care Service

Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. They cater to families needing flexible childcare options and wanting a balanced approach that supports social, physical, and early academic development in a diverse environment.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Apples Childcare and Learning Centre, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“What should I say about Apples Childcare & Learning Centre in Onehunga? Amazing people (ALL of them), nice and tidy environment, heaps of creative activities for the kids being busy without being overwhelmed, learning through experience, sense of belonging, caring for others, lovely, peaceful and harmonic energy around the centre, respect for themselves and the others. Kids being happy and being able to express themselves while being supported. That means a lot! Kids are kids, kids cry, miss their parents, get tired, kids are learning to deal with their emotions... They cry for many reasons. Every single time my daughter cried there (and I've seen other kids as well), they are always supported, the teacher are always there for them, patiently, lovely, offering them a cuddle, a talk in a way they understand from that experience, from that feeling, they become strong, they are not alone. I am not here to sell "oh, Apples is the best!", in fact IT IS! We love it! My daughter loves it and misses every teacher, friend, music, playtime, artwork, draw, learning, "splish splash", gratefulness time together, having food together, dancing in the rain, laughing, smiling, reading books, playing family characters, receiving us there and so much more. She spent two years with Apples Whanau, starting on her birthday and finishing on her birthday. Sadly we needed to move as I changed my workplace. I also kept chasing the manager to keep going and open a primary school and so on, as I absolutely love the way they teach, care and support our kids, their methodology, their atmosphere itself, it was love first sight for my daughter and I. They have the juniors room and preschoolers room, kids can see eachother from the gate, which is awesome, they feel comfortable when it is time for the transition, they can help their friends, play together, keep in touch and always build strong bonds. One way or another, if you let yourself in, the parents at some point become more than just "have a good day" from drop off/pick up times, the kids have this magical way to connect all of us because they learn it there, they are encouraged too, they live the examples. I could keep going and write all day about Apples, all nice words and feelings. So, give it a try, it is your best call, your daughters and sons will love it. We highly recommend Apples!!! Warm regards, Patricia & Maya”

The team at apples has made her time at Apples so enjoyable and educational. She was well equipped for primary school with her teacher commenting she is one of the most confident and friendliest little girl in class. We can’t thank the team at Apples enough for the loving care and support they have provided for our daughter.”

They focused on your childs interest at the same time teaching new things. My kids are always excited to go to school and they have a smile on their face when we pick them up. “Firstly, I would like to thank Rachel and all the teachers, both past and present (especially Faith, Tee, Sally, Steven and Larissa) for all their hard work and dedication to making the Centre such a wonderful place for the children. My daughter started at Apples just before she turned one. Since then, Apples has been a second home for her. It has shaped her into a kind, capable and engaging child. She is now about to start school as a confident young person. We will be very sad to say goodbye to everyone at Apples. Very highly recommend!”
