What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Whitianga Explorers Ltd t/a Mercury Bay Preschool, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“Kim the smiling lady that’s what I would preferred calling her, is the manager of Mercury Bay Preschool. I always met her at French Fig where both of us bumped into each other getting our first coffees . One day my work brought me to pre school and there she was, cuddling a baby like her own. The role of manager is to manage the operation right; but I guess she has included comforting babies on top of the list of her duties. Couple of staff that I saw were amazing. I spotted a baby grabbing the hair of the ‘another mother’ in absence of his/her biological mother. Believe me she was smiling. Clean play area and all happy kids who waved at me when I left 🤗. My five minutes interaction with each one of them spoke volumes of this kindy! Send your babies there and relax- trust me they are in better hands than yours 😍!!”

“We moved to Whitianga for about 9 months, and enrolled our 3 year old in Mercury Bay Preschool - she absolutely loved it (sadly we've moved back to Auckland) she adored all of her teachers and still talks about them (3 months later) She had a very special bond with Kim, who has done an AMAZING job reviving the centre. Our daughter would ask if she could go on Saturday's and Sunday's.. she loved it that much!”
