About Tuakau Kindergarten
About Free Kindergarten
Free Kindergartens typically offer sessional or part-day early learning programmes led by fully qualified teachers, following Te Whāriki and emphasising learning through play, social interaction, and community involvement. These centres cater to families seeking high-quality education in a not-for-profit, community-based setting with strong ties to local whānau.
What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Tuakau Kindergarten, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“Just the best early childhood learning experience. We have been to a few daycares and kindergartens and Tuakau Kindergarten is a rare hidden gem. Apart from the Nature Discovery programme, the kindergarten itself has great outdoors areas, the teachers are always setting up super engaging activities like making recycled paper, sewing, making a playhouse and the list goes on. Always a cool display of live tadpoles or caterpillars to learn about metamorphosis or even recently eggs incubating to chicks! What makes this place even more special though are the teachers. They have a great culture and it really trickles down to how the children are cared for. The energy is always calm and peaceful. We feel very lucky that our kids get to experience this. My son who is now school age still gets excited to come for a visit. I personally also find it hard to leave in the at drop offs 🤣”
“Absolutely the most incredible environment for any child to spend their pre school years. My children have thrived at Tuakau Kindergarten. The teachers are all wonderful people who have created such a warm, welcoming and happy environment.”
“Wonderful kindy, teachers are attentive, warm and approachable, with lovely welcoming setup. My son has been attending for 5 months and he is loving it. He enjoys getting out in the nature discovery program they have on two days a week, giving him time to play and get messy in the farm/forest. The community projects they have are pretty awesome for the tamariki to be a part of. Highly recommend.”
“I can't speak highly enough of Tuakau Kindergarten, we feel very lucky to have had this Kindy just down the road from us for our two girls! You will not come across a more knowledgeable, dedicated, down to earth team. They are a team of long Gevity & it shows. They plan around children's' interests & the children are always so involved and hands on with what ever they are learning about. Their Nature Discovery programme is truly amazing, it lets children experience the outdoors & get amongst nature & have experiences they may never have otherwise. My girls have always loved going & talk about the teachers as if they are family. It will be a sad day when our youngest leaves.”
“Amazing kindy community and teachers. We’ve been with the kindy for over six years with all of our children having been through. With high staff retention, there is a stable teaching team and the teachers really get to know you and your family, and genuinely strive to meet your child’s needs/interests. The nature discovery programme is excellent for the children to get outside and explore nature, in all seasons! Our children have very fond memories and long term friendships established during their time at Tuakau Kindy.”
