What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Te Kōhanga Reo o Whakaahurangi, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“My daughter goes to kohanga reo at Whakaahurangi marae. Herewini Nopera is the caretaker of the marae and Head teacher. He is an absolute credit to this marae and to our area. If you have free time, take part in his evening te reo maori lessons, which are available to anyone from beginners to more advanced speakers.”

“Wasnt there for long but this marae is awesome man. Huge spaces, i think they might they have an endless supply of mattresses. Dinning area is huge so is the kitchen and lounge area. Kids also able to play outside as there it has a big compound with plenty of grass. Only 1 thing i would suggest is a sign on the road to back parking and front entry.”
