About Education & Care Service

Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. They cater to families needing flexible childcare options and wanting a balanced approach that supports social, physical, and early academic development in a diverse environment.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Stratford Community Childcare Centre, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“I’m disappointed with Stratford Community Childcare. Despite several attempts to address concerns with the center's management and teachers, my child's basic needs, such as regulating body temperature in varying conditions, were not adequately met. Additionally, my concerns about using shaving foam with young children, especially those with eczema, were not taken seriously. As a parent, I expect early childhood educators to act professionally and prioritize children's well-being. Unfortunately, my concerns were dismissed rather than properly addressed. On my child's last day, I was informed there would be a farewell celebration during mat time. However, when I arrived at 2 pm, the children were already eating at the table, and the head teacher informed me they had run out of time for the celebration. This lack of coordination was disappointing and added to my overall dissatisfaction with the service.”

“If your child has any delay issues or behavior issues whether they are large or small please think twice before sending your child here my son wasn't officially diagnosed while enrolled the 6 months here . I have had the worst experience here unfortunately, my son was enrolled for 6 months. Within those six months, I was regularly asking for an increase in hours from 9 or more so I could return to work. They kept giving me a no, with no real explanation. leaving us feeling rejected unwanted, and unsupported. It finally took one meeting 6 months later find out that the teachers could not handle my son due to some climbing and needing one on one attention every now, their words were "his climbing is a safe and healthy issue " so pathetic what child does not climb, that's on them to create a safe environment. How dare they call my child a health and safety issue! and then and apparently having meetings most months with out any of this information being giving to me or my son being spoken to me about . This was after 6 months of feeling lost and asking for answers. The admin lady was so unprofessional and rude on my last pick up where I advised them I'm pulling him out and putting him into a centre that is educated and has the staff to cater to his needs. This centre really needs to upskill their staff and I think if I had him moved a long time ago I would be seeing a difference in his behavior, half the staff is not fully trained and looks they don't want to be there most of the time. I feel my son was failed and i look forward to a new centre meeting his needs . I based the staff not wanting to take him on more just lazy and uneducated. He now spent 3 months at a new centre and thriving in it, not crying on drop offs every day now. Which looking back now is quite concerning as he hated being there even after 6 months due to the neglect behaviour towards him, most times of walk in to the teacher just shouting no at him. Wish we made the move sooner or they had been honest with me sooner about not wanting to care for him or having the right trained staff. Also I used to spy on my child upon pick up to see how he was doing and behaving to see why the centre was refusing extra hours. His profile teacher did not see me hiding and was putting toys away in the shed, my son was trying to enter the shed and she did not want him to, so instead of picking him up and explaining why or asking him not to or removing him from the situation I watched in horror of her just closing him in the door tight as he was trying to get though! I was so upset to see this and wondered what else was happening when eyes where not on her. I told the centre manager about this at our final meeting and she advises me 'well everyone has bad days' no I'll talk to her ect! No teachers bad day should ever reflect to neglect of a child! Absolutely terrible! This just confirmed I needed get him out asap. My poor child spent 6 months here”
