About Te Kōhanga Reo
Te Kōhanga Reo centres are Māori immersion environments committed to the revitalisation of te reo Māori, with learning led by whānau and grounded in kaupapa Māori. They cater to families who want their tamariki fully immersed in Māori language and cultural practices, fostering strong identity, confidence, and intergenerational language transmission.
What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Te Kōhanga Reo o Toku Mapihi Maurea, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“I enrolled my baby Feb 2023 and have no issues dropping her off each day. She loves her kaiako and her hoa and i can see it in the way she is when shes there. The staff and whanau are all lovely and friendly always welcoming when we arrive and when we leave. Were a small kohanga and its a perfect way to adjust your baby as it can be overwhelming with lots of other children and adults around.”
“Unfortunately would not recommend this kohanga from our experiences while our son was there in 2021. It had poor governance, the values were not of whanaungatanga, or mana enhancing to our whanau or sons kuia, and also to another hospital works family while there. Would not recommend to other Waikato hospital or CBD staff, nor new parents to kohanga until the goverance has been sorted and an ERO review has been done. Hope things improve as its a great location.”
