About Piki Te Ora
About Hospital Based
Hospital-based early childhood services provide care and education for young children who are in hospital or who have whānau receiving medical care, offering play-based learning and emotional support in a sensitive setting. These centres cater to families needing safe, compassionate early learning opportunities during hospital stays or treatment periods.
What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Piki Te Ora, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“Some of my clothing went missing while I was in the ED, but I did get them back a few days later... after I left hospital with no shirt or shoes. I had to wear a gown home. Need a better system.”
“Hubby had a visit to the endoscopy clinic today. His appointment had to be changed due to various reasons but he was still seen in a timely manner. They bent over backward to ensure the appointment could be made at a time suited to us as we have overseas travel booked soon. All the staff we dealt with from those who made contact for appointment times, nurses & doctor were so caring and kind. The procedure was carried out in a very professional way and we were given all the information once it was time to leave. Well done HB hospital”
“Ophthalmology Team in Villa 3 are outstanding. Even though they are extremely busy they always make you feel like you are their only patient. Keep up the great work.”
“I spent from December 2024 to March 2025 as a patient here. During my stay I come to know the system here. From the paramedics, ED team, B3 nurses, Orthopaedic Drs, physios, OT staff, Care assistants, cleaners, orderly, ATR rehab nurses, doctors and managers were amazingly supportive of me and the other patients from what I could see. They allowed me and my whanau to spend the time we needed, even if I had a lot of family come through. Christmas, NY and birthdays were spent in care and back in hospital. Rehabilitation was lengthy, this is where I spent the most time. The Chaplaincy team and Māori liaison support, social worker were a great resource to assist patients. Well done HAwkes Bay hospital, you should be proud of your care ❤️”
