About Education & Care Service

Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. They cater to families needing flexible childcare options and wanting a balanced approach that supports social, physical, and early academic development in a diverse environment.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Little Wonders Glendowie, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“Positives - Doesn't have a waiting list - The long operating hours were helpful Negatives - Communication was extremely poor. My child was only there for 6 months, and we went the first 5 months receiving only 1 learning story. - Emails were not responded to. I would have to keep sending follow-up emails to receive a reply. - Did not receive any meaningful updates on my child's progress - When my child left, I was given my child's "learning aspirations" document which was completely blank. Did they not have learning aspirations for them? - Activities that were promised when we joined (regular outings, science lessons, cultural exchanges, piano lessons) didn't seem to occur. - There was a lack of planned activities where parents could attend - They exited my son two weeks early (even though I gave them the correct leaving date) forcing me to quickly make alternate care arrangements. It was very confusing when I picked my child up one day to be told it was his final day at the centre. - There were a high number of relievers at the centre - They held my child's graduation/farewell without us being invited. We didn't even know he had a farewell/graduation until I was given his portfolio book on the last day and saw photos of these events. After I complained they offered to re-do his farewell, but we declined as this would have been confusing for him. My child was only at the centre for 6 months. If they were not leaving for school, I would have found somewhere else to place them.”

“My daughter has been enrolled at Little Wonders since she was 5 months old. She is so well cared for and loved. The environment is very warm and welcoming and posesses a homely vibe. The teachers are loving and they love my daughter as if she were there own. We are so excited to embark on her next journey to the over 2’s room.”

“Our four year old attends Little Wonders Glendowie and we cannot say enough about the staff and centre. They are kind, caring and present and they have helped Charlotte build her confidence, patience and empathy. The food is great, the communication too notch, and we feel safe knowing our daughter is safe and being well prepared for her next stages. The four year old group is a highlight, giving the older kids a chance to extend their learning. Cannot recommend highly enough - check it out for yourselves, you won’t regret it.”

“Absolutely love Acorn and has been amazing for my 2 children... Catherine who runs it genuinely cares for all the children and wants to make it a great environment for pre school development with the right mix of fun and learning. They have a 4 year old programme run for 4 year olds (as you'd expect) and is designed to get them ready for school with some of the elements of school... this is a perfect intro for my daughter who got an award at her first school assembly for settling in so quickly. The Christmas concert they put on is also a yearly highlight... and even though I'm off work this week and my son could stay at home, he has wanted to go to Acorn to play with his friends each day... I highly recommend Acorn to anyone considering a ELC in Auckland!”
