What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Kauri, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“Lovely, inviting and warm kohanga. The kaiako are professional, fluent and most of all caring. I feel like my son is in such safe hands with people who truly care whether he thrives or not. My son came home on his first day without me and was holding himself saying hugs. He smelt of one of the teachers perfume. It was then I realized he had been hugged and reassured all day long. I knew then they were taking care of my baby right. My son is a different kid at home. Less tantrums and more smiles. He seems so happy. In just 4 days he has learnt multiple maori words and is using them confidently in our whare. I am not from the area so was a bit worried to send him to a kohanga here. I didn't know whether my baby would be looked after to my standard. So please to say he is and I have already signed my daughter up on the waiting list to share this journey with her brother. Excellent kohanga.”
