About Onga Onga Playcentre
About Playcentre
Playcentres are parent-led early childhood services where families work alongside trained educators to support children’s learning through play, offering a warm, community-driven environment. These centres cater to parents who want to be actively involved in their child’s early education, enjoying a supportive, cooperative model that values whānau participation and mixed-age play.
What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Onga Onga Playcentre, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“Lovely in every way. Great home made egg and bacon sandwiches, loads of interesting things to look at and read, plus a great host. Well worth a slight detour to see all the work that's been done preserving this village”
“A charming cafe with everything else you might want on your travels. Well worth a little detour. The town is sparkling after 150th anniversary.”
“On a road trip from Napier to Masterton we called in to Onga onga general store and cafe for lunch and what a pleasent surprise. Really helpful friendly owners who made us fish n wedges, a big fish burger ( you need two hands to hold it) and a smooth as banana thick shake. Prices are really good and top quality food. Nice dining tables inside or tables out under the trees. The country store has heaps on offer inside and is also the local post office. An interesting town to visit with lots to see. Really nice clean toilets just down the road to keep the wife happy then on with our journey.”
“Dinky little township. Well set up General Store/Cafe. Extra friendly. Historic signage is quaint. Petrol pumls on the kerbside brings back fond memories. Worthwhile popping in here. A museum down the road too.”
“When heading north to Hawkes Bay via the east coast or south from the same....consider a refreshment break here. NZ at its best the way it was. Beaut meat pies. Packed bread rolls and sandwiches like mum used to make. Indoors or outdoors in the garden. Don't bypass Onga Onga. Just 17km north of Dannevirke and a stones through South of Waipawa. Historical sites to see after lunch.”
