About Free Kindergarten

Free Kindergartens typically offer sessional or part-day early learning programmes led by fully qualified teachers, following Te Whāriki and emphasising learning through play, social interaction, and community involvement. These centres cater to families seeking high-quality education in a not-for-profit, community-based setting with strong ties to local whānau.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Kidsfirst Kindergartens The Bays, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“I highly recommend The Bays Kindergarten to families considering ECE. Marjorie (head teacher) and the rest of the team are highly empathetic, caring with making sure all children are well taken care of, the best of all they seem like an extended family. Both my daughters went here (my youngest still attends) and I have always appreciated the cleaniness, openess and great flow of the environment. They have a beautiful kai routine, and 'mat' times, brilliant to teach children established routines and cultures in Te Reo and other languages.”

“The Bays is an amazing kindy! Our usual kindy is under renovations so we have come to The Bays for a couple of terms - and we are so impressed! We have been welcomed with open arms and it really does feel like a second home. All of the teachers are so amazing and have created such an amazing culture - they are nurturing, encouraging and respectful. Highly recommend!”

“Not a good place to take your kids they don't report to parents when other kids hurt them and also they don't protect parents with protection orders and side with the mum doing the bulling unsafe for parents and kids yesterday a parent pushed another parent and now they both get a final warning very uncool making a mum feel uncomifitable going there this kindergarten needs to be inverstergated”
