About Free Kindergarten

Free Kindergartens typically offer sessional or part-day early learning programmes led by fully qualified teachers, following Te Whāriki and emphasising learning through play, social interaction, and community involvement. These centres cater to families seeking high-quality education in a not-for-profit, community-based setting with strong ties to local whānau.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Kidsfirst Kindergartens Shirley, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“Such a beautiful place for our children to learn and grow. As soon as you walk into the kindy you feel welcomed by all the lovely teachers. Our son loves going and he asks most days if he can go to kindy.”

“Lovely teachers. I love how they individually pay attention to the children's need and write a review and feeback in Educa so us parents can see the progress of what they are learning in school. I often get educated too on how they build up the learning through playing. My daughter loves her kindee so much. It's never a dull moment for her. She often feels sad when it is not her school day, she very much enjoys her kindee. Teachers are so approachable and loving and good values are very much imparted to my daughter. Would rate them higher than 5 star.”
