About Education & Care Service
Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. They cater to families needing flexible childcare options and wanting a balanced approach that supports social, physical, and early academic development in a diverse environment.
What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Halswell Nest Early Learning, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“We moved from Auckland to Christchurch and our son was at Halswell Nest for 2 years. In that time it’s hard to articulate how amazing for him, and our family the centre was to us. The teachers are absolutely awesome, they encourage the children to explore, and do lots of outings with the kids, even if it’s down the road to the park, to the library or even to the supermarket for baking supplies. I really valued the smaller numbers, home-away-from-home vibe, the caring nature of the team, as well as their experience. I also liked that all ages were in together, which allowed our son to learn to interact with kids of all ages. They do have a separate space for younger children but encourage play across age groups. It was with reluctance we left to head away again, but we will never forget our time there and people we met. The owners and teachers really supported us through the pandemic, we felt cared for and supported. Thanks team! All the best :-)”
