About Education & Care Service
Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?
20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at First Years Richmond, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

Parent Reviews
“For nearly four years, First Years Richmond has felt like part of our family. Both of my boys began attending the centre just after their first birthdays, and from day one, the warmth and friendliness of the staff made the transition incredibly smooth. Their genuine care and professional approach gave me complete peace of mind. I couldn’t be happier with the choice to send my children to First Years Richmond—it's a nurturing, high-quality environment where kids truly thrive.”
“First Years has been such a special part of our family’s journey. My eldest attended for three years until he started school, and now my youngest is currently enrolled - and we’ve loved every minute of our time there. One of the standout features is the incredible outdoor area, there’s so much space for the kids to run and play. What really makes First Years shine though is the team of kind and supportive teachers. They’ve taken the time to get to know each of my children as individuals, despite having very different personalities, both of my kids have absolutely thrived. The care and attention given to each child is something really special. Dropping my children off each day has always felt like leaving them with family. I truly couldn’t recommend First Years highly enough.”
“First Years Richmond is an incredible centre with amazing staff and a great outdoor facility. I love how First Years is such a community based centre and also governed by a Board Of Trustees which I have found has also helped bring families together. I have had my 2 youngest boys go through First Years ( youngest currently still there ) and I couldn't speak more highly enough of the care the staff provide for the tamariki and well being of our children.”
“I couldn't recommend First Years Richmond enough to anyone looking for an early childhood centre. They have an amazing outdoor space which the kids are able to play in and explore in all kinds of weather, they have fantastic teachers/staff who are so adoring to the children and wonderful to deal with as parents as well. The kids are always busy and doing something new, testing new skills, learning something new. They all love to be at First Years, I wouldn't choose anywhere else”
“My two boys go to First Years and we couldn’t recommend the centre highly enough. Some of my favourite aspects of the centre are the amazing staff who my kids adore, the huge outdoor area and how culturally inclusive the centre is, celebrating so many important events. They offer the kids an incredible array of activities (carpentry, baking and dance classes to name just a few). Having twins also gives me a unique insight into how well they cater to every child’s interests and personality. They are so supportive of not just our boys, but also to us as parents. I feel so lucky that my kids get to spend their early years in such a kind and inclusive community.”
