What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Busy Bees Church Street, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“We had a really mixed experience with Busy Bees Church Street, especially in the Totara Room (over 2s). There were several moments where communication and supervision just didn’t meet the standard we expected. On one afternoon, we arrived to pick up our child and noticed clear marks on his face that hadn’t been mentioned to us. We only received an explanation after we asked about it, and we had to request the written report ourselves. For something that involved his face and head area, we would have appreciated a call or message straight away. This wasn’t the only concern. Our child slipped into a water play area on another day, and on a separate occasion when we arrived slightly early, the team didn’t immediately know where he was. We raised these issues at the time and were told adjustments would be made, but the follow-up situation still left us uneasy. To be fair, the Koru Room (under 2s) staff were fantastic — caring, attentive, and consistent. But our experience after the move to the Totara Room made us feel unsure about staying on. We’re sharing this so other parents can have a full picture when making their decision.”

“I would highly recommend the team at Busy Bees Church Street! They are like a home away from home for my little man and I feel absolutely comfortable leaving him in their capable care. They have fresh and nutritious food cooked daily on site. They also make sure to have a range of toys in constant rotation and exciting activities which help support their development, fine motor skills and coordination. The ladies always show the utmost care to my little man and ensure he is well loved and cared for. I know how well they treat him as he opens his arms to them for a cuddle in the morning, something he does to very few people outside of myself and his dad. Thank you Busy Bees!”
