About Education & Care Service

Education & Care Services are mainstream early learning centres that offer full-day or part-day care with a structured curriculum, qualified teachers, and a focus on learning through play. They cater to families needing flexible childcare options and wanting a balanced approach that supports social, physical, and early academic development in a diverse environment.

What Is 20 Hours ECE funding?

20 Hours ECE is a government-funded initiative that helps reduce the cost of early childhood education for families with tamariki aged 3–5. Eligible children can receive up to 20 hours of funded care and education each week at participating services. Centres can set their own enrolment patterns and may ask for optional charges, but the funded hours themselves should be free of compulsory fees. If you are unsure how this works at Active Explorers Blenheim, it is best to ask the centre directly how they apply 20 Hours ECE.

“We've just moved from the North Island to Blenheim and transitioning my 2yr old son to his new daycare couldn't have been any easier. Lynn (the centre admin) was able to help us out before we even arrived, she certainly went above and beyond to ensure we had all the relevant info, and even saved us a spot under no obligation. The centre has amazing indoor and outdoor spaces, and the staff have been very warm and welcoming. They are very transparent and organised with the structure and intentions for each day. Most importantly, the tamariki all look very happy to be there and have so much to engage in.”

“My boy started at Active Explorers around 2 years old, he moved through the classrooms with ease, each classroom had wonderful teachers, they made each change easy for him when the time came. He recently has moved on to school, he was prepared for his transition due to the Active Explorers kaiako helping him along the way, he learned many simple things like hanging his bag like they would at school, introduced a lunchbox, mat time, controlling his emotions with breathing exercises, taking care of his peers and belongings, he also learned that he was a natural born leader with a loud voice that could get the rest of his class mates doing jobs that were needed to be done. I think starting with simple tasks really helped him understand how school was going to look once he arrived. His preschool journey was customized to suit him and his needs, it helped him turn into the big confident school boy he is today. He left for school confident, eager to learn and prepared for the next adventure due to the help he gained from his kaiako! A big thank you to all that were involved in teaching him during his time with Active Explorers we would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a warm welcoming centre”

“Management is rude. Teachers are excellent. In 5 months we were just late to pick our son couple of times may be with some genuine reason. Even we tried calling to centre to inform but there was no one to answer. Today I was just 13 mins late as got stuck when I had to pick my daughter from school first as she had some issue. Centre manager literally rush and said you often get late to pick up which is completely wrong. Without knowing when we drop off or pic up our son as we don’t see her even once a week. We understand it’s difficult to handle kids but everyone has some situation. We normally don’t post any reviews but today we felt we should. Bit disappointing.”

“Both my kids have and are currently at active explorers, they absolutely love going, are always happy and excited to attend. The staff are amazing, very supportive and caring towards the tamariki, celebrating achievements and success. The check in and help ensure routines are followed and work along side you to reach goals for the children.”

“Active Explorers Blenheim felt so calm and nurturing the second we walked in. The teachers are delightful and you get the sense they are happy with their workplace, while genuinely loving the kids too. So many different experiences were offered for our daughter - obstacle courses, librarian visits, and police officer visits. We were gutted when she turned 5 and we had to leave this wonderful preschool. Highly recommend!”
